New this week
Three restorations our projectionists are proudest of — each with the source and the treatment documented, nothing hidden.
Lang’s great city symphony, rebuilt from the complete Buenos Aires restoration — 25 minutes of footage lost for eight decades, returned to the cut.
Watch the restorationTechnicolor at its most intoxicating, regraded from the original three-strip negatives.
The film that taught cinema to doubt. Grain intact, silences preserved.
From nitrate to 4K
Every film in our catalogue passes through the same four rooms of our lab. The work is manual, slow, and deliberately invisible.
Negatives and fine-grain masters are scanned at 4K and 8K, frame by frame, on wet-gate scanners that read through surface damage.
Tears, dirt and flicker are repaired by hand. Where material is lost, the program note says so. No invented detail. No AI.
Colour is graded against period references — Technicolor charts, release prints, the chemists’ own notes. Never a modern look.
We present the theatrical cut with the original score and silence intact. The film you watch is the film that premiered.
A new diary every Friday — with stills, sources and mistakes.
